Safety and Guest Operations Case Study

Supporting Safe and Efficient Attraction Operations

Attraction operations require constant attention to safety, timing, communication and guest readiness. Every operating cycle depends on accurate inspections, restraint verification, clear instructions, coordinated boarding and the ability to respond appropriately when conditions change.

At Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, I supported daily ride operations by following established procedures, managing guest movement, communicating safety requirements and coordinating with the ride team to maintain an organized and positive attraction environment.

The Operational Challenge

Ride Operations Required Safety, Efficiency and Hospitality at the Same Time

Every guest needed to meet the attraction’s requirements, understand the instructions, board correctly, secure personal items and be properly restrained before the ride could begin.

At the same time, the team had to monitor the attraction area, keep queues organized, prevent unauthorized entry, confirm readiness, coordinate dispatch, assist with unloading, reset the platform, answer questions, recognize unusual conditions and pause normal operation when required.

  • Monitor the attraction area and visible operating conditions
  • Keep queues, entry points and boarding areas organized
  • Verify eligibility, positioning and restraint security
  • Coordinate dispatch and unloading with the ride team
  • Respond to questions and explain safety requirements
  • Recognize unusual conditions and communicate immediately
  • Follow emergency and incident procedures when required

The challenge was to maintain attention and procedural accuracy through repeated cycles while continuing to provide a positive guest experience.

The Attraction Operating Cycle

Repeating Every Critical Step, Every Cycle

Even after many successful cycles, every new dispatch required the same level of inspection, verification, communication and attention.

01 Inspect

Review the operating area and visible equipment condition during assigned checks.

02 Prepare

Confirm that the station, entrance, exit and boarding areas are ready.

03 Organize the Queue

Maintain orderly movement and communicate wait, entry and boarding instructions.

04 Board Guests

Direct guests to the correct seat or position and assist when necessary.

05 Verify Eligibility

Confirm height and other established attraction requirements.

06 Check Restraints

Ensure restraints are correctly positioned, engaged and secured.

07 Confirm the Platform

Verify that guests, team members, gates and operating areas are ready.

08 Operate

Follow the required dispatch and ride-control procedures.

09 Monitor

Remain alert to guest behavior, operating conditions and unusual events.

10 Unload

Assist guests in leaving the attraction safely and efficiently.

11 Reset

Return the platform and operating area to a ready condition for the next group.

Core Workstreams

Eight Areas of Safety and Guest Operations Support

The role connected attraction readiness, guest requirements, boarding, restraints, queue management, hospitality, incident response and team coordination.

Workstream 01

Ride-Area and Equipment Inspection

The attraction area needed to remain safe, clean, accessible and ready for operation.

  • Boarding platform condition
  • Entrance, exit and queue areas
  • Ride seating areas and restraints
  • Gates and access points
  • Loose objects, walkways and visible obstructions
  • General cleanliness and organization
  • Communication of visible equipment concerns

Workstream 06

Malfunction and Incident Response

Unexpected attraction, platform or guest conditions required established procedures rather than improvisation.

  • Recognize unusual equipment or guest conditions
  • Stop or hold normal activity when required
  • Communicate with the ride team
  • Secure the assigned area
  • Follow the defined protocol and responsibility chain
  • Support guests with calm instructions
  • Resume only under the appropriate clearance procedure

Safe dispatch depended on every assigned operating position completing its responsibility and communicating clearly.

  • Understand and maintain the assigned position
  • Complete required checks
  • Communicate readiness clearly
  • Report concerns immediately
  • Confirm instructions and reposition when needed
  • Maintain awareness of other operating areas
  • Avoid assuming another person completed a check

  • Incorrect seating or positioning
  • Personal items not secured
  • Guest appears unwell or distressed
  • Safety requirement not met

Restraint and Seating

  • Restraint not properly engaged
  • Guest does not fit the required position
  • Seat area not ready
  • Additional verification needed

Platform and Queue

  • Unauthorized entry
  • Crowding or blocked exit
  • Loose object
  • Spill or obstruction

Equipment and Operations

  • Unusual sound or visible behavior
  • Control or communication concern
  • Ride interruption
  • Unclear operating condition

External Conditions

  • Weather concern
  • Guest incident
  • Operational direction from supervision
  • Emergency communication

Safe Operations Depend on Consistency, Awareness and Communication

Ride operations require the same critical steps to be completed accurately throughout every operating cycle.

At Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, I supported this process by following established safety procedures while maintaining clear and respectful guest communication. My work supported safe daily attraction operations, consistent restraint and operating checks, organized guest flow during busy periods and appropriate response to operational concerns.

The experience demonstrated my ability to remain attentive in a repetitive, high-volume environment where safety, efficiency, hospitality and teamwork had to remain aligned at all times.
